Join me below for DAY EIGHTEEN -LEADERSHIP NUGGETS:
C18 - THE LAW OF SACRIFICE
A Leader Must Give Up to Go Up
Leaders have to give up in order to go up.
Successful leaders have to maintain an attitude of sacrifice for an organization to turn around.
They have to be willing to do what it takes to go to the next level.
The Law of Sacrifice maintains that one sacrifice seldom brings success.
Lee Iacoca says, "Leadership means setting an example. When you find yourself in a position of leadership, people follow your every move."
THE HEART OF LEADERSHIP
You have to give up to go up.
The True nature of leadership is really sacrifice.
COUNTING THE COST OF LEADERSHIP
Sacrifice is a constant in leadership.
It's an ongoing process.
Anytime that you know the step is right, don't hesitate to make the sacrifice.
YOU'VE GOT TO GIVE UP TO GO UP
Leaders who want to rise have to do more than take an occasional pay cut.
They have to give up their rights.
Gerald Brooks says,
"When you become a leader, you lose the right to think about yourself."
Leadership means sacrifice.
Leaders give up to go up.
Usually, the higher that leader has climbed, the greater the sacrifice he has made.
Effective leaders sacrifice much that is good in order to dedicate themselves to what is best.
Robert Palmer, Digital Chairman and Chief Executive said in an interview,
"In my model of management, there is very little wiggle room. If you want a management job, then you have to accept the responsibility and accountability that goes with it."
This is the cost of leadership.
If leaders have to give up to go up, they have to do even more to stay up.
The only way to stay up is to give up even more.
Leadership success requires Continual change, improvement, and sacrifice.
Philosopher-poet Ralph Emerson offered this option:
"For everything you have missed, you have gained something else; and for everything you gain, you lose something."
THE HIGHER YOU GO, THE MORE YOU GIVE UP
The greater the leader, the more he must give up.
Coretta Scott King, Wife of Martin Luther King Jr,, remarked,
"Day and night our phone would ring, and someone would pour out a string of obscene epithets . . . Frequently the calls ended with a threat to kill us if we didn't get out of town. But in spite of all the danger, the chaos of our private lives, I felt inspired, almost elated."
There is no success without sacrifice.
The higher the level of leadership you want to reach, the greater the sacrifices you will have to make.
To go up, you will have to give up.
That is the true nature of leadership.
