C2 - THE LAW OF INFLUENCE

The True Measure of Leadership Is Influence–Nothing More, Nothing Less

  • If you don't have influence, you will never be able to lead others.

  • How do you measure your influence?

LEADERSHIP IS NOT

  • True leadership cannot be awarded, appointed, or assigned.

  • It comes from influence, and that can't be mandated.

  • It must be earned.

  • The only thing a title can buy is a little time.

    • To increase your level of influence; or,

    • To erase it.

FIVE MYTHS ABOUT LEADERSHIP

  • THE MANAGEMENT MYTH

    • The difference between leadership and management.

      • Leadership is about influencing people to follow.

      • Management focuses on managing systems and processes.

    • The best way to test whether a person can lead rather than just manage is to ask him to create positive change.

      • Managers can maintain direction, but they can't change it.

      • To move people in a new direction, you need influence.

  • THE ENTREPRENEUR MYTH

    • People may buy what you sell, but that doesn't mean that they are following you.

    • Just because you can persuade people for a moment does not mean you hold long-term influence with them.

  • THE KNOWLEDGE MYTH

    • You can visit any major university and meet brilliant research scientists and philosophers whose ability to think is so high that is so high that it's off the charts, but their ability to lead is so low that it doesn’t even register on the charts.

    • IQ doesn't necessarily equate to leadership.

  • THE PIONEER MYTH

    • Anyone who is out in front of the crowd is a leader.

    • Being first isn't always the same as leading.

    • To be a leader, a person has to not only be out front, but also have people intentionally coming behind him, following his lead, and acting on his vision.

  • THE POSITION MYTH

    • People think leadership is based on position, but it’s not.

      1. WHO'S THE REAL LEADER

        • Hard work is required to gain influence in any organization and to earn the right to become the leader.

      2. LEADERSHIP IS . . .

        • Leadership is influence-Nothing more, nothing less.

      3. LEADERSHIP WITHOUT LEVERAGE

        • Positional leadership does not work in volunteer organizations.

        • If a leader does not have leverage or influence he is ineffective.

        • In other organizations, the person who has position has incredible leverage.

        • Leadership in its purest form is the only thing that works in volunteer organizations.

        • Leaders only have their influence to aid them.

        • Followers in volunteer organizations cannot be forced to get on board.

        • If the leader has no influence with them, then they won't follow.

        • If you are a businessperson and you really want to find out whether your people are capable of leading, send them out to volunteer their time in the community.

        • If they can get people to follow them while they are serving at the Red Cross, a United Way Shelter, or their local church, then you know that they really do have influence - and leadership ability.

      4. If you can't influence others, they won't follow you.

      5. If they won't follow you, you are not a leader.

      QUESTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION:

      1. Would you say you have influence?

      2. Share an environment where you are currently making impact through your influence. How can you improve your influence in this environment to make greater impact?

      3. Where do you need help as a influencer? Are you willing to do what it takes to grow as an influencer?
