C1 - THE LAW OF THE LID

QUESTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION

****************************************************************************************

For the next 21 Days, I will be sharing nuggets from John C. Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Law of Leadership.

****************************************************************************************

Join me below for DAY FOURTEEN -LEADERSHIP NUGGETS:

C14- THE LAW OF BUY-IN

People Buy Into the Leader, Then the Vision

  • The leader finds the dream and then the people.  The people find the leader and then the dream.

DON'T PUT THE CART FIRST

  • People don't first follow worthy causes.  They follow worthy leaders who promote worthwhile causes.

  • People buy into the leader first, then the leader's vision.

  • Questions should be asked,

    • Have I given people reason to follow me?

    • If yes, they will gladly buy into your vision.

    • If I have not built credibility with people, it really doesn't matter how great a vision I have.

YOU ARE THE MESSAGE

  • Every message that the people receives is filtered through the messenger who delivers it.

  • If you consider the messenger to be credible, then you believe the message has value.

  • Once people have bought into someone, they are willing to give his vision a chance.

  • People want to go along with people they get along with.

IT'S NOT AN EITHER/OR PROPOSITION

  • You cannot separate the leader from the cause he promotes.

  • The two always go together.

  • This is how people react to a leader and his vision under different circumstances:

    • Don't buy into leader/Don't buy into vision - Get another leader.

      • No win situation

    • Don't buy into leader/Buy into vision - Get another leader

      • Vision stays the same, but need a leader that people will follow.

    • Buy into leader/Don't buy into vision - Get another vision

      • If people have bought into the leader, they will still follow even if they don't like the vision.

      • When people don't buy into the  vision, they may work to try to get the leader to change the vision,or

      • They may abandon their point of view and adopt the leaders, or

      • May find a compromise.

    • Buy Into leader/Buy Into vision - Get behind the leader

      • People will follow the leader no matter how bad conditions get or how many odds are stacked against him.

  • As a leader, having a vision or a worthy

  • cause is not enough to get people to follow you.

  • First you must become a better leader.

  • You must get your people to buy into you.

  • That's the price you must pay if you want your vision to have a chance of becoming a reality.

  • As a leader, you don't gain any points for failing in a noble cause.

  • You don't get credit for being right.

  • Your success is measured by your ability to take the people where they need to go.

  • But people must first buy into you.

  • QUESTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION?

    1. Do you typically take time to develop credibility with people before asking them to help you?

    2. Have you observed/experienced situations where people did .not buy into the leader? If yes, in what setting.? What was the outcome?

    3. Is there a leader you have bought into? If yes, what have you hung in there with the leader through?
