C15- THE LAW OF VICTORY
Leaders Find a Way for the Team to Win
Victorious leaders share an inability to accept defeat.
The alternative to winning seems totally unacceptable to them, so they figure out what must be done to achieve victory, and then they go after it with everything at their disposal.
President Lincoln never forgot that the nation's victory was his highest priority, ahead of his pride, reputation, and personal comfort.
He surrounded himself with the best leaders possible, empowered his generals, and was never afraid to give others the credit for the victories the Union gained.
THESE LEADERS PURSUED VICTORY
Crisis seems to bring out the best — and the worst – in leaders.
Winston Churchill said,
"You ask, What is our aim? I answer in one word: Victory–victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival."
GREAT LEADERS FIND A WAY TO WIN
When the pressure is on, great leaders are at their best.
Whatever is inside them comes to the surface and works for or against them.
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT "GAME" THEY'RE IN
Flashy individual play doesn't always bring victory.
What's needed more than anything else is leadership.
THREE COMPONENTS OF VICTORY
UNITY OF VISION
Teams succeed only when players have a unified vision.
Teams don't win if players have different agendas.
DIVERSITY OF SKILLS
Teams need diverse talent and everyone playing their part.
A LEADER DEDICATED TO VICTORY AND RAISING PLAYERS TO THEIR POTENTIAL
Lou Holtz, Former Notre Dame head football coach says,
“You've got to have great athletes to win, I don't care who the coach is. You can't win without good athletes, but you can lose with them. This is where coaching makes the difference."
In other words, you also require leadership to achieve victory.
Unity of vision doesn't happen spontaneously.
It takes a leader to make things
It takes a leader to provide the motivation, empowerment and direction required to win.
Colleen Barrett, Southwest's Vice President of Administration sums it up:
"The warrior mentality, the very fight to survive is truly what created our culture."
Must not only have a will to survive, but must also have a will to win.
Leaders who practice the Law of Victory believe that anything less than success is unacceptable.
They have no Plan B.
That keeps them fighting.
QUESTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION?
1. Do you approach challenges with victory in mind or with a Plan B always in sight?
2. Do you look for a way to win or do you cave under pressure? Please share an example.
3. What are the three components of victory?
